Motorcycle Tire Tips for the Autumn/Winter Months
We are now well into autumn, and winter is just around the corner, making proper tire preparation, maintenance, and care more important than ever to cope with the different weather conditions of each season.
Below are some useful tips to help you get the most out of your tires in all conditions.
1. Tire and/or Vehicle Storage
As many riders choose to store their motorcycles during the winter months, they should keep the following in mind:
- Tires and/or vehicles should be stored indoors in a cool, dry place where water cannot accumulate inside the tires.
- Tires and/or vehicles should be kept away from electric generators, motors, and heat sources, such as hot pipes.
- Storage surfaces should be clean and free from grease, gasoline, or other substances that could damage the rubber if they come into contact with the tire for any length of time. Use a clean, damp cloth to remove these chemicals from the tire.
2. Tire Sidewall Care
- Use a mild soap solution to clean the sidewalls, white stripes, or raised white lettering, then rinse with clean water.
- Never apply other substances, cleaning agents, or polishing products to improve the appearance of the sidewall.
- These products may damage the rubber and reduce the tire’s natural resistance to ozone cracking and weather-related deterioration.
